How to get recommended by ChatGPT: 10 steps

A customer asks ChatGPT "who's a good hairdresser in Grbavica" or "who builds websites in Sarajevo". ChatGPT names three to five businesses. Here is what you can do to make one of them yours.

Ten steps

1. Allow AI crawlers. Don't block OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended in robots.txt. Check that your host or Cloudflare doesn't block them either.
2. Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools. ChatGPT search partly relies on Bing, so a page Bing doesn't have is harder for ChatGPT to reach. Submit a sitemap and use IndexNow.
3. Add your site to Google Search Console. Gemini and Google AI Overviews use Google's index.
4. Say clearly who you are, what you do and where. The first sentence on your home page should name the service and the place, for example "Dental practice in Grbavica, Sarajevo".
5. Keep your name, address and phone number the same everywhere: on your site, Google profile, Facebook, Instagram and in directories.
6. Add schema.org markup. Organization or LocalBusiness with your address, phone number and opening hours.
7. Create a questions and answers page. Answer what customers really ask: prices, lead times, parking, payment.
8. Set up Google Business Profile and Bing Places. Add photos, opening hours and categories, and reply to reviews.
9. Collect real reviews. Ask happy customers to write one. Don't buy fake reviews: Google removes them, and they can cost you your profile.
10. Publish articles. Every article that answers a real customer question is one more page AI can find and cite.
